Maria Lopez de la Cruz is the daughter of Mexican immigrants and a first-generation college graduate from California State University, Stanislaus. She earned her BA in Political Science with a minor in Chicano Studies in May 2016. She served two years in community nonprofits advocating for family participation in the education setting. There she facilitated discussion groups with parents from the public school sector that were focused on educational equity and mental health. She also created financial literacy workshops for low-income communities with topics that focused on first-time home buying, credit repair, and reducing debt. Maria co-led the Youth and Young Adults Committee for Voter’s Choice Napa, where she collaborated with community leaders and politicians to expand voter education and participation. She is also a contributing writer for The Bold Italic, where she writes about the Mexican-American millennial experience.
