Former Executive Director and Member of the CA State Board of Education
Sue Burr served as a member of the California State Board of Education (SBE) from 2013-2022. During her tenure the board implemented the Common Core Standards, adopted the Smarter Balanced Assessment Program, developed and updated curriculum frameworks in all core subject areas and established policies and practices related to the Local Control Funding Formula/Local Control Accountability Plan. She was the inaugural chair of the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence (CCEE) from 2015 to 2020 and returned to serve in that role again in 2021-22.
Prior to her appointment, she was the executive director of the SBE and education policy advisor to Governor Jerry Brown. During her 40-year professional career she held the following statewide roles in California: fiscal and policy analyst for the Legislative Analyst’s Office, consultant for both the Senate Education and Appropriations Committees and interim Secretary of Education under Governor Gray Davis. She also served as executive director and governmental relations director for the California County Superintendents’ Association, chief business officer for the Elk Grove Unified School District in Sacramento County, and as co-director of the California State University Institute for Education Reform. She earned bachelor and Master of Business Administration degrees from California State University, Sacramento.
