From Policy to Practice: A Model for Sustaining Linguistically Responsive Teacher Preparation

California’s updated TPEs (TPE 7) and ELA1 standards require teacher preparation programs to shift toward more robust, linguistically sustaining models. However, moving from policy compliance to authentic instructional integration remains a significant leadership challenge. This session outlines the Alder Language and Literacy Task Force’s journey in developing and implementing the Alder GSE Language Planning Tool. Presenters will share the tool’s framework, which comprises six key components designed to help faculty and residents analyze language demands and provide UDL-informed supports. We will discuss the organizational “change management” required to integrate this tool across diverse coursework, from foundational classes to clinical methods. Furthermore, we will share how this internal tool served as a powerful advocacy instrument during the accreditation process, demonstrating a tangible commitment to preparing linguistically responsive residents. Attendees will receive the Language Planning Tool and a roadmap for forming similar task forces. By sharing our challenges and opportunities, we aim to provide a scalable model for leaders to cultivate inclusive pedagogies that honor students’ home language practices and cultural wealth.
